At LoonyLearn we want our content to be as helpful to students as possible. This means we take time to align our curriculum to Common Core and other teaching standards. All our curriculum is designed to boost student achievement inside and outside the classroom.
In creating our spelling lists we compiled the most important spelling words for each grade. We compared the most-used spelling lists from CCSS teacher resources and standardized reading tests. Our spelling lists include vocabulary relevant to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts for each grade level. This helps students prepare for tests like the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and Texas Primary Reading Inventory.
Many educational game websites advertise their games as “fun” when they are simple multiple-choice questions with a cartoon background and funky sound effects. At LoonyLearn, we take pride in spelling games that are not only educational but truly fun for children. We don’t develop any games that we ourselves wouldn’t play. You won’t find any worksheets here! Your child will navigate mazes, aim at targets, and fight monsters--an engaging way to learn.
According to flow theory, students learn best when properly challenged. Our games are challenging but not impossible. Students will not be bored and feel a sense of pride when they beat a game.
We offer a variety of games, so if your child gets bored of one, they can play another! Each spelling game offers a new goal with the same words. With the power to choose which game they play, your child will love learning with LoonyLearn.
Studies show that learning happens through repetition (see here for more information). This means the more times a student sees a spelling word, the more likely they are to remember it. Teachers often use a strategy called differentiation to teach the same concept in different ways to repeat material. Games are a great way for educators to differentiate their teaching and give students a fun way to interact with their learning.
Our games are created to reinforce what your child learns in class by repeating the same concepts. As your child progresses through games, they will repeat the same words to advance through the levels. When a mistake occurs, the word is flagged and will reappear until your child spells it correctly. The more your child plays the game, the more they see the words, and the better they learn. Practice makes perfect!
We want to make sure our games are not only fun but also that your child learns from them. To ensure learning we developed games that make students think. Our games are not multiple-choice questions that students can guess their way through. Your child builds each word letter-by-letter, like in the game Spell Splat. This assures that the player knows how to spell the words to pass each level.
At LoonyLearn, we want all children to succeed, so we developed games that meet the needs of a variety of learners. For each spelling word list, there are games at easy, regular, and hard difficulty levels. We base each level on Bloom's Taxonomy. At easy levels, your child identifies the correct spelling, and at higher levels, they recall the spelling themselves. Whether your child likes a challenge or needs more guidance, we have a game designed for them.
